all that glitters is not gold

Today Susi from Design Shuffle is filling in for me while I finish up my very last final! She's here to talk about metallics...one of my very most favorite things and what better time of year than now?


Hi, Im Susi, a writer for Design Shuffle, a fabulous social media site where design lovers can meet, share ideas and show off projects. I love my job because I get to visit amazing blogs like Gold & Gray and talk about interior design. Today's article is about mixing metallics because as we know, all that glitters is not gold. And that's not a bad thing.


Mixing metallics, layering warm and cool metallics, gives a room a chic look that feels modern no matter the style. Here are some of my favorite metallics that add glitter and sparkle to a room.

This is the room that inspired this post. I love the antique gold of the mirror mixed with the silvery color of the mirrored chest below it. Mixing the two metallics brings out the silver highlights of the mirror.

Silver leaf, chrome and stainless steel create a symphony of silver tones in this kitchen. These cool metallics work equally well paired with warm and light woods.





Love the mix of gold, antique gold and bronze in the frames on this dark wall. Subtle variations in metallics are sophisticated in living room designs.





Silver and gold can be mixed together in the same space or even in the same object. These silvered glass votives have a warm, almost gold inside that would be gorgeous with candlelight.





A tarnished silver chandelier is very dramatic in this dining room. Mixed with dark metal stools at the counter, these metals have a low lustre sheen that is perfect for this modern farmhouse room.





Rose gold, copper and bronze have a lovely pink undertone that is a nice break from yellow gold but has the same sparkle. Of course, aged bronze or patinaed bronze is much darker and has a very different feel to it.





Looking for decorating ideas for a modern space? Try these. A brass bookshelf has a great aged patina that gives it depth. It is mixed with giltwood framed prints , making a palette of warm metallics.





This vintage bathroom blends metallics with ease. The copper tub has a silvery faucet; there is a bronze lamp and a brass mirror. This mix of metallics works. Images ( 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 )

Hello!  I’m Haley from Cardigan Junkie and I’m so happy to be here today while Lily is filling in over on my blog.  She and I are both big fans of dream decorating even though we have real life budgets, and we hought it would be fun for us each to build our ideal bedroom if budgets (and boys) were not a factor in the decision making.

I share a room with a husband who doesn’t even think headboards are necessary, so it was really fun for me to go nuts creating a girly, relaxing space with a huge bed and fun patterns.
